Project Life 2015 Catch-Up: Weeks 38 – 42

I’ve been chugging along, working as quickly as I can to finish up Project Life 2015. I wanted to have the pages done and the book ordered and in hands the first week of February. Yeah, not happening. But I’ll just keep chugging as fast as I can, while I continue to upload current photos and journaling so I don’t lose anything from my current memory keeping while I catch up on these past weeks. If you missed it, you can see more about how I do that here.

Staying Organized for (Digital) Project Life

As I recently shared, I am currently 16 weeks 13 weeks (progress!) behind on Project Life. I’m not really stressing about it because I have a system (do you know me? Obviously I have a system.). As promised, today I’m going to share a little peek into that system which helps me keep my photos, journaling, etc. organized so I don’t have to worry when I get behind.

I take a ridiculous number of photos every week, mostly on my iPhone. I like to get the photos off my phone once a week so they’re getting backed up and so I don’t lose track of where I am. So on Mondays I upload the previous week’s photos to Dropbox. (I just recently turned the Camera Upload feature back on in Dropbox so this part may be changing soon.) In Dropbox, I have a folder called _PHOTOS (the _ is so it shows up at the top of my list of folders alphabetically), and inside that folder I put a folder for each week.

How I upload/organize photos and journaling for Project Life.
Here’s how that looks on my phone:

How I upload/organize photos and journaling for Project Life.

Sidenote: There are two Week 52 folders because I’d already uploaded all of the photos from December 21 – 27 before I decided to include 12/28 – 12/31 in that last week of the year, so I made a second folder to keep things straight while uploading, then lumped them all into one folder on my computer called ‘Week 51 12-21 to 12-31’.

While those photos are uploading, I look back over my planner and my photos from the previous week and type up a short list of what we did that week, along with anything Ellie said or did that I want to remember, etc. Anything I might want in a Project Life layout for that week gets typed into a plain text file (so it opens easily on PC or Mac) and saved right in that same week’s folder of photos in Dropbox. Every couple of weeks I copy the photos and text file to a corresponding folder on my laptop and my desktop. On my desktop, in my Photos folder, I have a 2015 folder that has a folder for each month (01 January, 02 February, etc.), and then inside each of those folders is a folder for each week that falls into that month.

2015
>01 January
>>Week 1 1-5 to 1-11
>>Week 2 1-12 to 1-18

My laptop is just for scrapbooking, web surfing, etc. – not for long-term storage – so I just have a Project Life folder that has a folder for each week with the week number and dates. Once I scrapbook that week, I drag that week’s folder into a “DONE” folder and I’ll eventually just delete those since the photos, layouts, etc. are stored on my desktop (and backed up from there to the cloud).

Usually on Sunday evenings, I upload any photos I took on my dSLR that week into the corresponding week’s folder on my laptop (and into the folder in Dropbox so I can easily copy them over to my desktop for long-term storage) so those are ready to go with the iPhone photos. I keep a list in Evernote of all of the weeks of of the year with the week number and the date that looks like this:

How I upload/organize photos and journaling for Project Life.
The check boxes are:

  • to make sure I’ve uploaded the pictures to Dropbox
  • to make sure I’ve put the photos on both my laptop and my desktop
  • to make sure I’ve tagged and renamed them on my desktop in Bridge (I tag with the names of the people in the photos, the location or subject of the photo, etc. then rename with Year_Month_Day_’Original Filename from camera’ so they’ll show up in chronological order no matter if they’re iPhone photos or dSLR photos.
  • to be sure I’ve scrapbooked the layout on my MacBook
  • to be sure I’ve copied the layout to my iMac for long-term storage/backup

Once I’ve done all of those things, I will delete most of the checkboxes so it just looks like this:

How I upload/organize photos and journaling for Project Life.
So, WOW. That looks really time intensive and confusing. I promise it’s not, not at all. And now, looking at 13 weeks to catch up on, I’ve got 13 folders labeled with the week number and the dates stored on my laptop. Each folder contains all of the photos and information about that week ready to go, along with any digi supplies I want to be sure to use. I can access my list in Evernote from any computer, so I can always see where I’m at and what I need to work on next. When I’m done with a layout, I save the finished Photoshop file, full-size 12” x 12” JPGs of both sides of the layout (for printing), and any files resized to share on Instagram or my blog into Dropbox so I can get the full-size files onto my desktop and the small files onto my phone to share.

Clear as mud? Any questions? Fire away!

Project Life 2015 Catch-Up: Week 37

If you’ve been following along here for a while, you know that I used to share my Project Life layouts. And…that stopped in April 2014, a few weeks before I went back to work from maternity leave. Near the end of 2014 it was becoming clear to me that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with Project Life if I tried to continue doing it in paper. And I had a baby who would soon be mobile enough to get into my supplies if I had them spread around. So I switched to digital layouts that I just had printed at Persnickety Prints and slipped into 12″ x 12″ page protectors at the back of 2014’s album.

Sidenote: I am not using the Project Life app, although I have it and it’s dang awesome (and I do use it for part of my process for keeping organized for Project Life). This control freak just needs a little more control over fonts, etc. and I can add my fun digi supplies with a lot less finagling and moving files around if I just use Photoshop on my laptop.

After doing that for a few months and liking it, I decided that I’d continue doing digi layouts in 2015, but I’d order them in a 12″ x 12″ photo book. I love photo books and how little space they take up on the shelf compared to two huge three-ring albums per year. And the look is so clean and pretty. So that’s what I’ve been doing and I was chugging along, just a few weeks behind, for most of the year. Until Week in the Life in August. I switched over to working on that project instead of Project Life and with just 30 minutes to an hour on my lunch break at work and an hour or less some evenings, progress is pretty slow on my scrapbooking projects. I finally wrapped up my Week in the Life album and started working on Project Life pages again in November, just in time to get into December Daily which took priority over Project Life too. Other than waiting for one last batch of photo prints and wrapping up some last journaling and embellishing once they come, December Daily is pretty much done now too. That last week of the year I was really itching to get started on Project Life this year with the new Project 52 2016 kit I downloaded, but I’ve got 16 weeks of 2015 to catch up on before I’ll let myself get into the new year.

SIXTEEN WEEKS.

But have no fear. I’m determined, I have a goal (three weeks, which I’m really not sure is possible), and I’ve got a pretty good system in place. I’ll share a little peek into that system in the next few days or so. It may just help you stay organized for your own Project Life.

So without further ado, here is the page I finished yesterday. Week 37, complete with a Labor Day breakfast date and swimming, workouts, a healthy food grocery haul (solo! With Starbucks!!), and a full day of meal prep.

The 20 Books of 2015

1. The Longest Ride
This was a Nicholas Sparks book that I’d somehow missed until I saw it mentioned at the end of 2014 because of the movie coming out. I loved the book.

01 The Longest Ride

2. The Happiness of Pursuit
I heard Chris Guillebeau interviewed on a podcast and HAD to read his book. The man visited every country in the world. Awesome, inspiring book (and a good read for the beginning of the new year!).

02 The Happiness of Pursuit

3. The Fringe Hours
I posted about this book when I read it. An awesome read for any mama, or really probably anyone that’s not been making enough time for themselves.

03 The Fringe Hours

4. Happier at Home
I love, love Gretchen Rubin. Couldn’t pass this one up. Great read.

04 Happier at Home

5. The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe
This book had been on my “Books to Read” Pinterest board for a while. I loved it.

05 The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

6. The Secrets of Happy Families
Another one from my Pinterest board. I knocked several of those out this year. This one was just…okay.

06 The Secrets of Happy Families

7. Me Before You
A much talked about book online and on Instagram this year, I had to check it out. It was okay, but I HATED the ending. Blech. I’m interested to read the sequel…it’s on my list. 🙂

07 Me Before You

8. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
Another book from my Pinterest board. It was a light easy read. A nice change after Me Before You.

08 The Storied Life of AJ Fikry

9. The Girl on the Train
Another much talked about book. It was a page-turner for sure, but I didn’t love it.

09 The Girl on the Train

10. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
One of the most talked about books this year and I LOVED it. I want to Konmari EVERYTHING.

10 The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

11. Eleanor & Park
Another of 2015’s popular books it seemed. I loved it and didn’t want it to end. I need to read more of Rainbow Rowell’s books.

11 Eleanor & Park

12. We Are Called to Rise
Yet another popular book, at least in the blog/Instagram circle I’m in (mostly scrapbookers/creatives). This one was just ‘eh’ for me.

12 We Are Called to Rise

13. Grey
A new 50 Shades book…how could I not? Love them.

13 Grey

14. All the Light We Cannot See
A Pulitzer Prize winner on my list. I liked it and read it pretty quickly.

14 All the Light We Cannot See

15. Yes Please
Amy Poehler…I mean, you can’t go wrong.

15 Yes Please

16. Anchored
I heard about this book during an Amazon book sale. It was a tough, but very interesting look at what it’s like to have a very preemie baby and to come out on the other side. I wouldn’t recommend for a pregnant or new mama.

16 Anchored

17. Out of Line Series
I saw this one recommended by an Instagram friend and I loved it! Very easy read and it kept me up entirely too late at night.

17 Out of Line series

18. Finding Lily
I’ve followed Rachel del Grosso on Instagram for years so I had to check out her first self-published book.

18 Finding Lily

19. Captivated by You
I saw in a magazine that there was a new Crossfire book coming out in April 2016. When I went to pre-buy it for my Kindle, I saw there was a fourth book that I’d missed! This one kept me up too late at night and I flew through it.

19 Captivated by You

20. The Year of Pleasures
This book had been on my Pinterest board for years. I was itching to check out an actual physical book from the library and they had it, so on my bedside table it went. It was okay, but by the end I was just kind of ready to be done with it.

20 The Year of Pleasures

So those are the 20 books I managed to squeeze into 2015. I’ve got some awesome books stacked up on my bedside table, and several unread or barely started books in my Kindle app on my iPad. With my 10:00pm bedtime goal for 2016, I’m hoping to get back to more reading (and less scrolling)!

I’m also going to get back to blogging more as I crank through my 16 weeks (!!!) of Project Life that I’m behind on. I’ve got my photos organized and journaling for each week in the folder with them, so I’m ready to get rolling so I can get 2015’s book ordered! Check back soon!

Sunday’s words and photos coming soon!

Week in the Life – Friday 8/7/15

5:06AM First alarm goes off. Hit snooze. I am SO TIRED. Decide that I want to start my Friday with a workout, so I’ll get up when my alarm goes off again.

5:35AM To the garage. Moving slowly this morning. Run/walk intervals on the treadmill for 25 minutes and watch the news and yesterday’s Today Show.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

6:25AM Get in the shower.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

6:45AM Get dressed. Ellie is awake, standing up, and crying for me. Go get her up and ready, then sit on the couch with her and watch the beginning of the Today Show.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

7:10AM Go put my makeup on. Ellie follows me into the bathroom and digs in the drawers and under the sinks.

7:17AM Think I have a couple minutes to quickly dry my hair.

7:24AM Gather up our stuff and see that Ellie has peed. Run to change her diaper.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

Eat peanut butter balls on the way to daycare. I need to stop this. Get to Marianne’s just a few minutes late. Ellie is clingy today. Give her several hugs, and Marianne takes her to play with the babies so I can dart out the door.

10:00AM Text Ryan to ask him to add lettuce and a salad spinner to his grocery list.

11:30AM Go to Rockville on my lunch. Get my normal sweet onion chicken teriyaki, cheddar Sunchips, and iced tea at Subway. They knew my order when I got there. After months of coming in every Friday, apparently I’m a regular.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

Run to Casey’s for gas. While I’m pumping gas Ryan texts me back.

2015 Week in the Life: Friday

12:30PM Back to work.

Saturday’s words and photos coming soon!

Week in the Life – Thursday 8/6/15

5:06AM First alarm goes off. Hit snooze.

5:33AM To the garage. Raise the garage door and it’s raining but not blowing in so I leave it open and enjoy the sound and the cool breeze. Oscar sits in the doorway the whole time I work out. Do two rounds of Tone It Up’s 7 minute HIIT workout (lunges, jump squats, planks, crunches, jumping jacks) and a few minutes of their Bikini Abs workout.

6:17AM Go inside and realize that Ryan’s not left yet, and he’s not even ready. He’s JUST gotten up and is brushing his teeth. I put the filter in the coffee pot and set out the coffee because I don’t know how much he puts in. I go to the garage and get his uniform shirt and pants and lay on the counter, and gather his phone, keys, etc. for him.

6:25AM Finally get in the shower. Running way behind.

6:35AM Turn off the shower and hear that Ellie’s crying. She’s standing up in her bed so I hurry to dry off and get dressed. By the time I’m dressed she’s laying back down quietly, so I dry my hair, and put my makeup on before I have to get her up. We’re almost back on schedule.

7:03AM Get her up. She’s happy and talking. She’s excited about the butterfly outfit I have laid out for her that Nana Cheryl brought her last week.

7:07AM Head to the couch. Got her ready in record time. Snuggle and watch the beginning of the Today Show.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

7:20AM Out the door. Give her a blankey over her car seat today and she snuggles with it all the way to Marianne’s. When we get there she’s snuggling with her blankey and holding her milk in one arm and Tigger and her burp cloth in the other. 🙂

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

7:45AM Jacob and Finnley are happy to see her. They’re telling each other “I’m Finnley!” “I’m Jacob!” over and over. They’re all crowding around and there are babies everywhere. No wonder Ellie loves it here. And Maddox is back! His mom’s a school teacher so he’s been gone all summer and he was her best buddy in the spring. She called for him for days when summer break started. I tell her I love her and give her lots of kisses and she gets down to play, so I head out the door. When I walk past the window she is crying and reaching for me, and Marianne is picking her up.

8:00AM At my desk. Marianne texts me a picture. I knew she’d be fine, probably even before I got out of the driveway.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

11:30AM Go to lunch. Read blogs. Work on Project Life on my laptop.

1:30PM A coworker brings me a frappuccino. YUM.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

1:45PM The afternoon company mail comes with a hot pink shirt for Ryan that I asked our human resources person for. He loves their shirts because they’re thin, and said he would wear pink if I’d get him one. I send him a text. 🙂

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

3:00PM Taking pictures for our monthly flyers.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

4:40PM Back to my desk to catch up on anything that has to be done today. Hard-boiled egg snack.

5:00PM Take my peanut butter balls home to eat in the car. Ellie is happy to see me. She’s quiet all the way home, drinking her leftover milk from this morning that I kept in the fridge at work today.

Daddy is home when we get home. He comes out to get Ellie out of the car, then goes to take a shower. I start a load of laundry, Ellie helps me push the laundry basket into the kitchen to fold laundry while we watch the news.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

6:30PM Daddy heats up spaghetti for Ellie. I eat the rest. We eat mixed veggies and cottage cheese. Ellie eats a ton of blueberries, then she and I share a chocolate ice cream drumstick. After I eat the bottom of the cone, she yells “IIII CEAM!!!” over and over for a few minutes. Sorry baby girl, Mama ate the rest. 🙂

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

8:30PM Daddy changes her diaper, then I rock her and sing to her. She is mad that I take the sippy cup away when her water is gone so she’ll stop sucking air. She’s yelling at me. When Daddy comes in to tell her goodnight she is mad and he picks her up and hugs her and she burps so loud. She won’t give either of us a kiss, but she lays down fine.

2015 Week in the Life: Thursday

8:45PM Ellie’s in bed. I rewrite the grocery list for Ryan for Wal-Mart tomorrow.

9:15PM Head to the couch with peanut butter balls to watch the Republican debate and catch up on IG and FB.

10:45PM Order State Fair tickets online (they’re $9 a piece, but $12 at the gate).

11:00PM Finally head to bed and read for a few minutes. Have to get Ryan off the couch twice to come to bed.

Friday’s words and photos coming soon!

Week in the Life – Wednesday 8/5/15

5:06am First alarm goes off. Hit snooze.

5:30am Run. Do a leg routine and an arm routine from Tone It Up YouTube videos.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

6:40am Get dressed while Ellie is standing up crying in her bed.

6:45am Get her up. She’s her normal cheery self while I get her up and changed and dressed.

6:50am Try to sit her on her couch by the bathroom while I dry my hair. She throws a fit so I try to snuggle on the couch with her like normal, she screams and wants down. So I let her down and go in and dry my hair. She follows me and drags her couch around to sit in front of the trash can. Fusses and cries while I dry my hair. I go in to do my makeup and finish getting ready and she fusses and cries and screams and throws herself down on the bathroom floor. I set her in the hallway outside the bathroom and tell her she has to sit out there until she’s done throwing a fit. She stops and I bring her back in the bathroom and she throws another fit so I ignore her. Finish getting ready.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

Get our stuff gathered up while Ellie throws a fit on her couch in the kitchen. Pour her more milk and carry our stuff to the car while she fusses and screams.

Drop Ellie off at Marianne’s. Jacob is there today and comes running to the door, “Ewwie!”. He tells me that he found Ellie’s sunglasses (they were in his bag), that he brought his sunglasses, that Marianne is looking for Umi Zumi (from what I understand). He is so freaking cute. He calls me “Ewwie’s mom”, or “Nichole” when Marianne corrects him. Ellie steals his sunglasses and screams when I give them back to him, screams “MINE!” when baby Mason takes hers, and follows me to the door and cries when I try to leave. I give her a kiss and hand her to Marianne and she’s playing when I leave.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

3:08pm Text Ryan to make sure he remembered his appointment at the FSA office in Attica to register for farm stuff. He responds that he’s almost to Stone Bluff.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

Pick up Ellie. She’s happy to see me. Marianne said she was good all day. All the way home she says, “Mommy!?!”, I say, “What-y??”, and she says “ahahahahaha!!!” and giggles like crazy.

Ryan is weedeating the ditches when we get home. I give Ellie milk and she asks for a snack (“Nack?”), so I give her a bowl with Goldfish crackers. She asks for Daniel Tiger (“Tigah? Tigah?”) so I play an episode from the DVR about stopping play to go potty. I put laundry in the washer.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

6:30pm I heat up baby ravioli and steamed mixed veggies for Ellie.

6:50pm Ryan finishes his shower and helps Ellie eat. She eats ravioli, veggies, shredded cheese, applesauce, and a ton of blueberries.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

7:45pm Ryan gives her a bath.

I swiffer and listen to new music on my phone.

Move laundry and start a new load. Ellie peed on the towel after bath before Ryan got a diaper on her. She comes out, puts her hands on her knees and yells, “BATH!!” like normal.

8:06pm Ryan puts her jammies on. We all play and read on the living room floor.

2015 Week in the Life: Wednesday

8:25pm Diaper, rock, sing, and bed for Ellie. She refuses to give Daddy a kiss. This has been going on for a couple weeks now, refusing to kiss Daddy. But she’s SO excited when she calls for him and he comes to her room to say goodnight.

9:10pm Watch TV on the couch with Ryan and eat two peanut butter balls. Ellie is out cold.

10:30pm Head to bed to read for a few minutes and decide on my Tone It Up workout for tomorrow morning.

Favorite Moment:Picking up Ellie from daycare. When she was smaller, she would cry when I got there and not want to come to me because she wanted to stay and play. Now she’s almost always happy to see me, but I can tell she’s happy there too.

Observations: I took a good amount of pictures and had plenty to go in my album. I had a couple that might work for Tuesday too. I’ll never remember they weren’t taken on Tuesday.

Putting this project together has been so fun. I was going to do it digitally and print a photobook and so far I’m so glad I’m doing it this way. It makes me excited for December Daily coming up in the winter!

Thursday’s words and photos coming soon!

Week in the Life – Tuesday 8/4/15

5:30am Do a running/calisthenics circuit from the Tone It Up blog for 25 minutes, then an arm workout.

Week in the Life 2015 - Tuesday

Shower and dry my hair. Ryan texts to say the truck was loud on the way to the repair shop this morning so he checked it and it will need a new muffler/tailpipe on top of the transmission work it was going in for. Super.

7:00am Go in to get Ellie. She’s already awake, standing up, and yelling for me. She’s happy today and saying “Oscar! Diaper! Elmo!”. We head to the couch to watch the Today Show, snuggle, and drink milk. I set the DVR to record the Today Show so I can watch them in the evening while I scrapbook.

Week in the Life 2015 - Tuesday

Pour Ellie more milk and load up the car to head to Marianne’s.

11:30am Heat up my salad and read blogs.

12:00pm Edit the pictures that Ryan took of me rocking Ellie last night and post one to Instagram.

12:30pm Back to work.

2:30pm A little peanut butter ball afternoon snack. I text Cheryl and Tiff about our Myrtle Beach condo. I’m thinking it might be too far from all the attractions. Decide we’ll all meet at Rodney and Cheryl’s tonight to discuss.

Week in the Life 2015 - Tuesday
When I get to daycare to pick up Ellie, she’s outside and they’re trying to get sand off her hands and feet. One of the little girls put her hair in a ponytail and it’s so freaking cute.

Ryan is standing in the garage ready to go to his parents’ when we get home. He tells me that the repair shop called and the truck is also going to need brake work because it had no brakes when they pulled it in (double super).

Go to Rodney and Cheryl’s for supper. While we eat, Maddi keeps getting Ellie to say “happy!”.

7:00pm Maddi and Ellie play outside with the guys while we look at other hotels. Decide to stay with what we have booked. Joe comes over to take a picture of Maddi in her coyote hat that Rodney had made for her from the coyote that Ryan shot.

8:00pm Head home. I give Ellie a bath. It goes surprisingly well for how late it is.

Week in the Life 2015 - Tuesday

8:30pm Rock, sing, and bed. She’s mad when her water’s gone and I take her sippy away so she’ll stop sucking air. She is still mad, screaming, and trying to stand up when I leave the room. She fusses and cries for a few minutes, which is not normal.

9:15pm She’s laying down finally and is quiet.

9:45pm I fall asleep on the couch after getting caught up on Instagram and Facebook.

10:25pm Bed. Look at my workouts on the Tone It Up website for tomorrow morning. Read for a few minutes.

————————————————————-

Favorite Moment: Getting Ellie up in the morning. She was already awake and jabbering sweetly when I went in.

Observations: I only took 66 pictures on Tuesday and am having trouble coming up with what feels like enough to include in my album. I skipped over working on Tuesday and went back to it after I filled in my other days to see if there were extra photos that could be used interchangeably for Tuesday (I put in some pictures of our house that I took on Sunday).

Wednesday’s words and photos coming soon!
